Grooming Pekingese: what their coat needs

  • Pekingese have a long outer coat over a thick, soft undercoat.
  • The coat mats easily behind the ears, around the legs and under the body if it is not brushed.
  • Their flat faces and skin folds need to be kept clean and dry, and flat-faced dogs can struggle in heat, so we groom them calmly and keep them cool.

How often?

A groom every 4 to 8 weeks suits most Pekingese, with brushing at home in between. A lion cut is easier to keep between visits.

Between grooms

  • Brush through to the undercoat a few times a week.
  • Keep the face folds clean and dry.
  • Keep your Peke cool and out of the midday heat.
